Mark I Trench Knife

This knife has a flat double-edged blade 6 3/4 in. long and 1 in. wide.  The hilt was cast bronze with individual finger loops.  The government placed orders for 1,232,780 of these knives with several manufacturers, but the Armistice caused all to be canceled except for 1 lot of 119,424 made by Landers, Frary & Clark.

We have 2 specimens of this knife.  The first is marked on the grips "U.S. 1918" "L. F & C - 1918" in 2 lines.  The scabbard is marked "L. F & C" "1918" in 2 lines.

The second is marked on the grips "U.S. 1918" "L. F & C - 1918" in 2 lines.  The finger loops do not have the spikes on the bottom.  The blade is single edged and marked near the hilt "Cattaraugus" in script and "2250".
