Below is a list of reference books that I have used in researching the pieces in my collection. Some may be harder to acquire than others but all have been very useful.
U.S. Military Firearms 1776-1956, by Major James E. Hicks This book gives a detailed history of each arm as well as many War Department letters. There are also fine drawings of each arm.
United States Muskets,Rifles,and Carbines, by Colonel Arcadi Gluckman This book gives a short history and detailed description of each arm and how they differed from preceding models. This is a great book for anyone interested in the specific dimensions of the arms.
Gun Tools: Their History and Identification Vol. I & II, by Shaffer, Rutledge, and Dorsey. These books were invaluable in identifying the various gun tools. The history of each tool is given along with photographs and dimensions. I have used these books almost exclusively to research the tools. The other books I have either don't mention tools or refer to them only in passing. I highly recommend these books.
Trapdoor Springfield, by Waite and Ernst This book has a lot of detailed information on the trapdoors. It also gives good information on the .45-70 ammunition.
The .58- and .50- Caliber Rifles & Carbines of the Springfield Armory 1865-1872, by Richard A. Hosmer This is a very informative book on the weapons of the period. There is also good information on the tools, ammunition and accoutrements.
Springfield Shoulder Arms 1795-1865, by Claud E. Fuller This book gives detailed information on each weapon as well as some production figures.
The Rifled Musket, by Claud E. Fuller Good information on the 1861-1864 models as well as the contract arms.
The '03 Springfield, by Clark S. Campbell Very informative book on all the variations of '03,'03A1 and '03A3. It also gives descriptions and photographs of all the issued equipment, such as bayonets and scabbards, grenade launchers, etc. It also gives detailed information on the various cartridges used.
Springfield Armory Shoulder Weapons 1795-1968, by Robert D. Ball Mainly a pictorial history with detailed photos of each weapon. It also gives a short description.
American Socket Bayonets 1717-1873, by Donald B. Webster Jr. This book has illustrations and gives dimensions of the model bayonets.
American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards, by Robert M. Reilly This book has many illustrations and goes in to great detail on a large number of bayonets and scabbards.
Swords and Sabers of the Armory at Springfield, by Burton A. Kellerstedt This book contains many photos and illustrations.
American Knives, by Harold L. Peterson This book contains photos of many different knives by many different manufacturers.
The History and Development of Small Arms Ammunition Vol. I, by George A. Hoyem This book has many photos of early cartridges. It also gives the dimensions.
British Military Firearms 1650-1850, by Howard L. Blackmore
